Michael Che is taking his stand-up act to North Beach this month, bringing his loose, provocative live material to Cobb's Comedy Club for a four-show run. The Saturday Night Live star will perform at 8 p.m. next Tuesday through Thursday at the 400-seat club at 915 Columbus Avenue, with tickets starting at $99.
Che's stand-up has long carried a different edge than the material he delivers behind the Weekend Update desk, leaning into a laid-back delivery and a willingness to dig into politics, race and current events, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The Chronicle notes his live sets tend to be looser and more provocative than what makes it onto network television, a distinction longtime fans of his club appearances have come to expect.
Live Nation's schedule for the club shows four total performances across the run, adding a late-night 10:30 p.m. set next Thursday, on top of the standard 8 p.m. shows next Tuesday through Thursday, according to Cobb's Comedy Club. That extra slot gives local fans another shot at tickets if the earlier shows sell out.
A North Beach Room With Its Own History
Cobb's has been a fixture of San Francisco comedy since 1982, though its address hasn't stayed fixed the whole time. The club moved to its current Columbus Avenue location in 2002 after a fire destroyed its original Fisherman's Wharf home, a history Hoodline detailed when covering another comedy tour stop there last year. The venue is part of Live Nation's local club portfolio alongside San Francisco's Punch Line.
Che isn't a stranger to Bay Area stages. He filmed his second Netflix stand-up special, Michael Che: Shame the Devil, at Oakland's Fox Theater before its November 2021 release, per the Chronicle's earlier reporting picked up by SFGate. That taping followed his 2016 debut hour, Michael Che Matters, which the outlet Beyond the Joke reports hit the #1 overall spot on Netflix twice — once at its initial release and again during a 2020 viewership surge.
From Daily Show Correspondent to Weekend Update History
Che's path to headlining stand-up runs through some of television's biggest comedy platforms. He started as a writer at Saturday Night Live in 2013 after a stint on Comedy Central as a correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as Beyond the Joke has chronicled. Later that year, he was selected to replace Cecily Strong on Weekend Update, becoming the first Black co-anchor in the segment's history alongside Colin Jost — a duo now recognized as the longest-serving Weekend Update anchor pairing ever.
Che went on to become the first Black head writer in SNL's history in 2017, sharing the co-head writer title with Jost, according to Vivid Seats. The pair's on-screen partnership extended to hosting the live telecast of the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC in September 2018. Jost has kept up his own touring schedule, recently bringing his stand-up material to Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center, as Hoodline reported in March.

Che has also built out a career as a showrunner, creating, writing, executive-producing and starring in the Max sketch series That Damn Michael Che, which debuted in 2021 and returned for a second season in May 2022, per AXS. The San Francisco dates are part of a broader national tour that includes a stop at First Avenue in Minneapolis, where his sets are scheduled to be recorded live for an upcoming televised special, according to First Avenue.
Resale data from Vivid Seats shows San Francisco ranks among the more affordable stops on the tour, with median sold ticket prices around $100 compared to steeper resale demand in cities like Denver and Chicago. Whether Che uses the Cobb's dates to work out new material ahead of SNL's next season or his taped special remains an open question, though the added late show next Thursday gives local audiences one more chance to catch him try it out live.
