Speedway police activated their SWAT team and obtained a search warrant for an apartment at Runaway Bay Apartments on Friday morning after officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a firearm, only to discover the suspect was not inside when they finally searched the unit. Every occupant found at the scene was safe and accounted for, and officers say there is no known threat to the public at this time.
According to a statement posted by the Speedway Police Department on Facebook, officers initially received information about a possible armed subject barricaded inside an apartment at the complex, located at 2030 Runaway Bay Drive near West 21st Street and North High School Road. Given the reported presence of a firearm, the department's SWAT team was activated out of caution before officers moved in. Runaway Bay Apartments is a sprawling multi-family community roughly three miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, offering one- to three-bedroom units with private entryways and detached garages, according to IRT Living.
Search Warrant Executed, but No Suspect Found
Officers obtained a search warrant before entering the unit, and the department's statement says the apartment was searched safely with all occupants located. Despite the initial report of a barricaded armed subject, police confirmed the individual involved was not actually inside the apartment when the search was carried out. The investigation remains ongoing, and the department said it may release additional information later, provided doing so does not compromise the case, per the same Facebook statement.
Officers collected evidence and photographs related to the incident, and the case will be forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office for review and consideration of criminal charges. In Marion County, specialized domestic violence prosecutors can evaluate physical evidence, photographs, and victim statements and request arrest warrants even when a suspect fled before officers arrived, according to Banks & Brower.
What Charges Could Look Like
Under Indiana Code § 35-42-2-1.3, domestic battery is typically charged as a Class A misdemeanor, but committing battery with a firearm elevates the offense to a Level 5 felony, carrying a prison sentence of one to six years and fines up to $10,000, the Marc Lopez Law Firm notes. Indiana law also permanently complicates gun ownership for anyone convicted in a case like this: under Indiana Code § 35-47-4-6, a domestic battery conviction bars firearm possession, and state law requires a minimum five-year waiting period before a person can even petition to restore those rights, according to the Giffords Law Center.
Speedway's tactical response fits a pattern seen elsewhere in Marion County, where SWAT units are routinely deployed whenever firearms are reported in residential barricade situations to limit risk to officers and neighbors, as Hoodline reported after a July armed standoff in east Indianapolis. Though Speedway sits surrounded by Indianapolis, it remains its own incorporated town with a full-time police department headquartered at 5300 Crawfordsville Road, separate from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. That independence extends to tactical operations — Speedway maintains its own dedicated SWAT team for high-risk calls including armed domestic disturbances, barricaded suspects, and search warrant executions.
Part of a Recent Pattern in Speedway
Friday's incident is not the first time gunfire and a domestic call have prompted a heavy police response in Speedway this year. In late July, a Hoodline report detailed a separate domestic disturbance involving gunfire inside a Speedway home, which ended with a suspect fleeing on foot onto the town's B&O Trail before being caught. Runaway Bay Apartments itself has been the site of major police activity before: in February 2018, an 11-year-old girl went missing from the complex, triggering a multi-agency search with aerial drones before she was found safe three miles away in Indianapolis, according to WTHR.
For now, police stress that the investigation is ongoing and the identity of the suspect has not been released. Whether the Marion County Prosecutor's Office will pursue charges, and whether the suspect has since been located, remain open questions the department has not yet addressed publicly.
