Five masked men tried to remove an ATM from a Capital One Bank in Gentilly before dawn on September 18, but the attempt failed. The machine was heavily damaged, no cash was taken, and the suspects fled in a pickup truck, according to police.
According to WDSU, the New Orleans Police Department is investigating the attempted theft at the Capital One branch at 4201 Elysian Fields Avenue. It occurred around 6:30 a.m. that Friday. Yahoo News, citing surveillance footage, reported that a white Chevrolet Dually pickup with no license plate visible pulled into the bank's drive-thru lane and moved toward the rear of the building.
Crowbars and a Cable, But No Cash
Police said at least five men used crowbars on the ATM and attached a cable from the pickup to the machine in an apparent effort to pull it free. The attempt did not succeed. The ATM sustained heavy damage, but no money was taken, according to police.
The suspects returned to the pickup and left on Elysian Fields Avenue toward Marigny Street. Investigators have not said where the vehicle went after that intersection, and no suspect names, descriptions, or arrests have been released.
A similar regional case
In a separate case, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office said an attempted ATM theft at New Orleans Fireman's Federal Credit Union in Lockport on July 30, 2026, involved a damaged machine and boxes of cash that were later recovered. The suspects fled in a truck, and three men were charged, unlike in the Gentilly attempt, in which no money was taken and no arrests have been announced.
Investigation Continues
The case remains open as detectives work to identify the suspects and locate the truck. NOPD has not released an estimate of the ATM damage or repair costs.
