A 26-year-old man was shot and killed on the 2700 block of North Harding Avenue in Logan Square Sunday night, Chicago police say. Officers responding to the scene around 7:59 p.m. found the man unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the back.
He was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Chicago police, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. The hospital, formally known as Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on West Wellington Avenue in Lakeview, is one of just four state-designated Level 1 adult trauma centers within Chicago city limits, meaning it maintains round-the-clock surgical teams and advanced critical care equipment for exactly this kind of emergency. Area Five detectives, who handle homicide investigations out of their headquarters at 5555 W. Grand Avenue, are now leading the inquiry.
A Street With a Troubled Recent History
The killing marks the latest in a string of violent incidents on North Harding Avenue this year. Just days earlier, on August 31, a 23-year-old woman was pistol-whipped in an alley on the 1800 block of North Harding Avenue, near the western end of the 606 Bloomingdale Trail, as Hoodline previously reported in its piece on the pistol-whipping steps from the 606 Trail. In April, a 45-year-old woman was carjacked at gunpoint on the 1100 block of North Harding Avenue by a juvenile-led crew that went on to use her stolen vehicle in a spree of armed robberies across the city, according to CWB Chicago.
The street has also been the site of an unsolved homicide. In May, Chicago police released updated surveillance footage seeking help identifying a suspect and a light-colored SUV tied to an August 2024 shooting on the 1700 block of North Harding Avenue that left a 32-year-old man dead and two others wounded, a case Hoodline covered in its report on the manhunt over the 2024 killing. Farther back, an October 2011 shooting on the 2300 block of North Harding Avenue left a 22-year-old woman dead after her brother opened fire on both of his sisters during an argument at a backyard gathering, according to CBS News.
Broader Crime Trends in the 14th District
The 2700 block of North Harding Avenue sits within CPD's 14th District, known as the Shakespeare District, which covers Logan Square, Bucktown, Wicker Park, and parts of Avondale and Humboldt Park from its headquarters at 2150 N. California Avenue. Reported crime in the district rose 36% between 2022 and 2023, driven by a 57% jump in robberies and an 86% increase in motor vehicle thefts, per the same Hoodline report on the alley assault.
Citywide, the picture looks different. Through August, Chicago had recorded 289 homicides this year, keeping pace with 2025, a year that closed out with the city's lowest total homicide count in 60 years at 416 killings, according to WTTW News. That means even as the city's overall homicide rate holds near historic lows, corridors like North Harding Avenue continue to see repeated flashes of gun violence.
No Suspect Identified, Investigation Ongoing
Police have not released information about a suspect, motive, or vehicle description tied to Sunday's shooting. It remains unknown whether the victim lived on the block or had any connection to the area's recent history of violence. Anyone with information is asked to cooperate with Area Five detectives as the investigation continues.
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, Illinois law sets steep penalties for first-degree murder. Under 720 ILCS 5/9-1, a conviction carries a mandatory 20 to 60 years in prison, with enhancements up to life without parole if the crime was committed with a firearm, and no possibility of probation. Illinois abolished the death penalty in 2011, making life without parole the maximum sentence available under state law.
