Portland is waking Monday to clear skies and a calm 57 degrees, but the summer-like weather is on borrowed time. The city is forecast to reach 85 under mostly sunny skies, then trade the sunshine for clouds, rain and a few storm chances starting Tuesday.
One More Warm Afternoon
Monday should stay dry through the afternoon, with a light north-northwest breeze near 3 mph and only a 2% chance of rain. The National Weather Service Portland expects clouds to build Monday night, when temperatures fall to around 59.
Tuesday brings the first real turn in the pattern. Rain could begin after 1 p.m. as the high slips to about 71, then become likely Tuesday night, with a 60% chance of precipitation, southwest wind gusts up to 23 mph and roughly a tenth to a quarter-inch of rain possible.
Wednesday Looks Like The Wettest Day
Wednesday is the week’s main washout, with rain expected before 2 p.m. and showers and thunderstorms possible afterward. Portland’s forecast calls for a high near 65, southerly gusts up to 26 mph and a 100% chance of rain, with new rainfall totals between a half-inch and three-quarters of an inch.
The storm threat is not a guarantee for every neighborhood, but forecasters put the chance of thunderstorms at 10% to 20%. Any storms that develop could bring lightning, a quick heavy downpour, erratic wind gusts or small hail, making Wednesday afternoon a poor bet for exposed outdoor plans.
The latest outlook is a sharper turn than the forecast described in Hoodline’s earlier update. Thursday remains unsettled, with rain likely before 11 a.m., showers and thunderstorms possible through the afternoon, and a high near 66.
Cooler, Showery Weather Hangs On
Friday should be less intense but still carries a 35% chance of light rain, with a high around 68. The weekend improves into the low 70s with partly sunny skies, although slight rain chances remain Saturday and Sunday.
People heading toward the Oregon coast or Columbia River Bar should also watch marine conditions. A Small Craft Advisory is scheduled for Monday afternoon and evening, while a Gale Watch runs from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening, when winds could gust near 45 mph and seas build toward 10 to 12 feet.
