South Weber City residents living within a one-mile radius of Silver Oak Lane and Old Maple Road were told to shelter in place Wednesday night after the Davis County Sheriff's Office was made aware of suspicious activity in the neighborhood. City officials described a potential situation and said the order was issued out of an abundance of caution, asking residents in the affected zone to remain inside their homes or current location until further notice.
The advisory was reported by ABC4 Utah, which noted the article was posted at 8:10 p.m. MDT Wednesday and updated at 10:14 p.m. MDT. Residents outside the one-mile radius were asked to avoid the area entirely, and the outlet's report explains that keeping clear of the zone allows emergency personnel to respond without interference. ABC4 said it had reached out to officials for more information but had no further details available at the time of publication.
Why South Weber Relies on County Deputies
South Weber does not run its own police department. Instead, the city contracts with the Davis County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement services under an interlocal agreement. At its June 23, 2026, meeting, the South Weber City Council approved Resolution 26-21, according to a filing on Utah.gov.
That arrangement means any misdemeanor citations stemming from a local investigation would fall under the South Weber Municipal Justice Court, which handles Class B and Class C infractions issued within city limits. Residents with non-urgent reports can also reach the sheriff's centralized 911 Communications Center through its non-emergency dispatch line.
How the Alert Reached Residents' Phones
The shelter-in-place notice would have gone out through Everbridge, the mass emergency alert platform that Davis County and five neighboring Northern Utah counties adopted in a regional switch from the older CodeRED system, completed in October 2024, according to Utah Public Radio. The system lets dispatchers geofence a specific radius, like the one-mile boundary drawn around Silver Oak Lane and Old Maple Road, and push advisories directly to residents' phones.
South Weber is a small, largely residential city of under 8,000 people, with the 2020 Census counting 7,867 residents across 4.7 square miles.
A Familiar Precaution in Davis County's Contract Cities
Wednesday's order is not the first time a Davis County contract city has seen a precautionary lockdown this year. In June, a pre-dawn exchange of gunfire in nearby West Point led deputies to issue a three-hour shelter-in-place order before detaining five teens amid a street scare, with no reported injuries. South Weber itself saw county deputies and emergency crews coordinate a different kind of response last month, when the wind-driven Dugway Fire burned 30 acres at the mouth of Weber Canyon, knocked out power to nearly 2,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers, and closed nearby roads.
The sheriff's office has also been mentioned in recent weeks. Separately, commissioners approved a countywide sales tax increase this week; one estimate listed $69,277 as the amount South Weber would receive if the tax were imposed.
No further details on the nature of Wednesday's suspicious activity report have been released. ABC4 reported at 9:45 p.m. that South Weber City had lifted the order because there was no longer a danger to the public.
