Clearfield police lifted a shelter-in-place order Sunday morning after officers safely took a person into custody for questioning about a shooting in Salt Lake County. The order had covered an apartment complex at 900 S 1500 E and the surrounding area while officers searched for someone described as armed and dangerous.
The Clearfield City Police Department issued the shelter-in-place order at about 11:10 a.m. and lifted it roughly 40 minutes later, according to kjzz.com. Officers said the person they were seeking was connected to a shooting in Murray. KUTV reported that police safely took the individual into custody and thanked the community for its cooperation, saying residents had supported, cooperated with and understood the response. Police also said they were grateful for officers' professionalism and the successful handling of the incident.
What Prompted the Lockdown
Clearfield officials said the shelter-in-place order was issued out of an abundance of caution while officers worked to locate and detain the person. Details on the investigation and the underlying Salt Lake County shooting had not been released as of Sunday.
A separate shooting investigation was underway in Salt Lake City, though it has not been confirmed as the same case referenced in the Clearfield response. Salt Lake City police received multiple reports of gunfire around 12:54 a.m. near 565 South and 600 West, per the same account from abc4.com. Detectives determined that three vehicles were involved and traced two of them to a local convenience store, and no injuries had been reported as the investigation continued.
Not the First Clearfield Lockdown This Year
This was not the first time Clearfield residents have been told to shelter in place over gunfire concerns. In August 2025, police issued a similar order after responding to reports of shots fired near 450 S 500 E, according to kutv.com. That warning lasted just under an hour and was lifted around 10:45 p.m. after police determined the noises residents heard had come from a blown electrical transformer rather than gunfire.
Sunday's incident followed a similar arc of caution, a brief lockdown and swift resolution, though it stemmed from an active search for a person considered armed and dangerous rather than a false alarm. Authorities have not released further details on the Murray shooting or the status of the person taken into custody.
