A fire tore through a single-story home on the 400 block of Bruce Road in unincorporated Lockport Township early Friday, leaving the house uninhabitable and sending one resident to the hospital after a fall during an attempt to fight the flames before help arrived.
Lockport Township Fire Protection District crews responded around 1:23 a.m. to a report of a fire at the Bruce Road address, according to WJOL. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire conditions inside the single-story, single-family residence, the station reported. As Shaw Local first reported, the occupants had already escaped the home before crews got there.
One resident suffered minor injuries after falling while trying to put out the fire ahead of the fire department's arrival, per the same account. That person was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for evaluation and treatment. No further details about the resident's condition were available.
Crews Knocked Down the Blaze Quickly
Firefighters moved fast once on scene, quickly bringing the fire under control and shifting into search, ventilation, salvage and overhaul operations, the station's report notes. Even so, the home sustained significant damage and is currently uninhabitable.
The response grew large enough that the incident was upgraded to a full still alarm, pulling in additional personnel and equipment from multiple area fire departments, the outlet reported. The Lockport Township Fire Protection District and MABAS 19 Fire Investigators are now working to determine what sparked the blaze. Officials said the cause remains under investigation, though the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
A Pattern of Overnight Fires in Lockport Township
Friday's fire is not the first overnight blaze to hit the area in recent memory. Several structures and vehicles burned in a separate Lockport Township fire that firefighters responded to around 2:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Fairmont Avenue, according to Patch. That fire involved a detached garage, small outbuildings, a motor home and several passenger vehicles, and it spread to the exterior of a main home before crews extinguished it. The occupants there were safely evacuated and received assistance from the Red Cross, with no injuries reported, and eight neighboring agencies assisted the fire district during that response. The cause and origin of the Fairmont Avenue fire were also left under investigation.
Another Lockport Township house fire, reported on Aug. 18, 2025, was attributed by the fire district to a lightning strike during storms, Patch reported. In that case, firefighters found flames in the attic of a two-story single-family home on West Caraway Court in Lockport, and the roof became fully engulfed, forcing crews into defensive operations. The residents were home and evacuated safely, but they were unable to stay in the house afterward and were assisted by the Red Cross. No injuries were reported, and that full-still alarm drew help from agencies including East Joliet, Homer, Lemont, New Lenox, Northwest Homer, Orland Park, Plainfield and Romeoville.
