A familiar name in San Francisco nightlife is setting his sights on Polk Gulch, proposing to combine two adjoining storefronts into one larger bar. Nate Valentine wants to merge the spaces at 2155 and 2157 Polk St., where the Buccaneer and House of Sushi, a Japanese restaurant, are located, into a single, bigger venue.
The proposal, first reported by The Business Journals, would combine two longtime storefronts side by side in the heart of Polk Gulch. The outlet reports that Valentine has partners behind several other San Francisco bars, including April Jean, Lost Resort and Harper & Rye, giving him a deep bench of nightlife experience to draw on for the Polk Street project.
A Building With History on Polk Street
The property itself carries some age of its own. According to PropertyShark, the development at 2155 Polk Street was built back in 1906 and totals 3,364 square feet, with the building currently holding four separate commercial spaces. City records cited by the San Francisco Board of Appeals have also placed Buccaneer at the 2155 Polk Street address, underscoring just how long the dive bar has been a fixture there.
Valentine's name is not new to San Francisco's bar scene. Per Restaurant Realty Company, he is a lifelong Bay Area resident described as an integral part of the city's social scene, and he co-founded Vintage415 with four partners back in 2002.
A Portfolio Built on Bold Buildouts
More recently, Valentine has kept busy alongside partner Jamal Blake-Williams on a string of higher-profile projects. The two added skylights to their Bar Darling buildout in the Marina, and opened Bar April Jean in North Beach the previous summer, according to The San Francisco Standard. That April Jean location, which took over the former Grant & Green Saloon space, was opened by Joe Poz in spring 2024 with Valentine and Blake-Williams as partners, the outlet separately reported.
Valentine and Blake-Williams have shown a willingness to spend on distinctive architectural touches before. The pair invested in a 40-by-18-foot retractable roof at their bar Peacekeeper back in 2019, an undisclosed but notably large expenditure, per the Standard. Many of their recent spaces, including Bar Darling and April Jean, were designed by Brittany Busacca, who is married to Blake-Williams.
Polk Gulch's Shifting Nightlife Landscape
The proposed project would land in a corner of Polk Street that has already seen turnover in its nightlife lineup. Just up the block, the Cinch Saloon, long considered the last remaining gay bar in Polk Gulch, got a fresh infusion from new ownership last year. The Cinch opened in 1974 and was taken over by Scott Taylor, a beverage director at nearby Harris' Restaurant for 23 years, according to Eater SF.
What remains unclear is the proposed bar's name, a timeline for opening, and where the project currently stands in the construction or approval process. It is also not established whether Buccaneer or House of Sushi has closed, relocated, or formally agreed to make way for the merged concept. For now, the plan stands as the latest sign of a well-known San Francisco bar entrepreneur circling fresh real estate in a neighborhood already in flux.
