Dustin Michael Law appeared in Logan’s 1st District Court on October 5 and accepted a plea deal, with sentencing scheduled for November 18, according to KVNU. The outlets disagree about the felony covered by the plea: KVNU reported third-degree felony forcible sexual abuse, while The Herald Journal reported reduced third-degree felony aggravated assault. Both accounts say the deal also involved misdemeanor property damage and domestic violence in the presence of a child.
The reports differ on other case details, too. KVNU identifies Law as 43; The Herald Journal gives his age as 44. KVNU says two other charges were dismissed with prejudice, while The Herald Journal reports that a second domestic violence charge and a misdemeanor count of interfering with a peace officer were dismissed without prejudice. KVNU reported that Law was free on $5,000 bail as he awaited sentencing.
The case followed a domestic dispute at a Hyrum residence on the night of August 27, according to Cache Valley Daily. In its account of the allegations, KVNU reported that an adult victim said Law tried to initiate sexual activity and touched her inappropriately. She went to a downstairs bedroom and locked the door; the outlet reported that Law kicked it, causing about $500 in damage. Two juveniles in the home witnessed and heard the dispute, according to KVNU.
KVNU reported that deputies found Law in the backyard and that he did not follow orders to be detained or consistently keep his hands visible. After dispatch alerted deputies that a firearm at the scene had not been accounted for, they fired a nonlethal projectile when he moved toward his waistband, according to the outlet. KVNU said medical personnel assessed Law at the scene before he was taken to jail.
