A 41-year-old man held at the Clark County Jail is dead, and Indiana State Police is now investigating the circumstances behind it. Eric B. Blanton was found unresponsive inside the jail by other inmates on a Saturday, and despite lifesaving efforts he was pronounced dead at the facility.
Indiana State Police announced Monday that it was investigating the death, according to newsandtribune.com. Lifesaving measures, including CPR, were attempted on Blanton after he was discovered unresponsive, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the jail by the Clark County coroner, per ISP's account relayed to the outlet. An autopsy was subsequently performed, investigators reported.
A preliminary autopsy report has listed the death as a suicide, according to The 812. ISP Sgt. Carey Huls said no foul play is suspected in Blanton's death, the outlet reported, though final autopsy results remain pending.
What Investigators Are Still Reviewing
An ISP detective is handling the investigation into Blanton's death, and the inquiry is not yet closed. Per the same account, the investigation will include reviews of surveillance footage from inside the jail as well as follow-up interviews, standard steps taken before any findings are considered final.
Because the final autopsy results are still outstanding, the official cause and manner of Blanton's death have not been conclusively determined. State police have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the discovery or about what, if anything, jail staff did in response before other inmates found him.
A Recurring Problem Inside Indiana's County Jails
Blanton's death adds to a troubling pattern documented across Indiana's county-run lockups. Suicide is the leading cause of death inside Indiana's county-run jails, and suicides have accounted for 42 percent of all jail deaths statewide since 2010, according to an IndyStar investigation. That same reporting noted that when 18-year-old Ariona Darling died in the Allen County Jail, she became the 12th person to die there since 2010.
Other Indiana counties have faced similar cases in recent years. Indiana State Police investigated the death of an inmate at the Tippecanoe County Jail after deputies conducting routine checks found him unresponsive on April 25, 2025, according to Star City TV. That inmate was taken to a hospital in the Lafayette area and died three days later; a preliminary investigation suggested the injuries were self-inflicted, and state police said no foul play was suspected.
In Huntington County, 32-year-old Quantae A. Jackson of Fort Wayne was found dead in his jail cell, HOT 100.9 reported. An autopsy there found results consistent with asphyxia due to hanging, and that death was ultimately ruled a suicide, according to the same outlet. National data compiled by the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows that roughly 12 percent of jail suicides between 2015 and 2019 occurred within the first 24 hours of incarceration, down from nearly 22 percent two decades earlier.
No further information has been released about Blanton's background or the specific circumstances that led to his death. Indiana State Police's investigation remains active as authorities await the final autopsy findings.
