The city hasn't announced or opened a single new safe sleeping site since presenting a list of 42 options in early June.

With no return of Castro nightlife in sight, Nizario's Pizza has closed its location in the neighborhood after nearly 20 years in business.

"It breaks my heart, I love this store a lot," said Imad Bitar, owner of several Castro businesses.

The Castro's sidewalks are full of diners, drinkers and exercisers, as businesses take advantage of the city's "shared spaces" program.

The CBD is confident that property owners will give it another 15-year term. But with city funding likely to plummet, it may still be forced to cut some services.

Officials say the person is in serious condition, with burns to 70% of their body.

"It was an era," says barber Philip Stover, who worked at the shop for nearly 40 years.

Founded in the Castro in 1976, the famed Bay Area ice cream brand is opening a new scoop shop in the neighborhood.

"We came to the ineluctable conclusion that our tiny business won't survive," said Mini-Chic owner Coralie Tran.

Opening amidst the pandemic has "been a roller coaster," says owner Diane Ramirez. "I think everyone can vouch for that."

"It's not looking good for the restaurant business," says owner Juan Romo.
