Amid the clamor of dissent and demand that colored the downtown streets, Salt Lake City Police reported an incident that punctuated a large demonstration with violence. In a social media post, the Salt Lake City Police Department declared, "Tonight, our officers arrested one man following an assault that occurred during a large demonstration in downtown."
According to the same post, the officers were on scene not just to ensure the peace, but also to provide traffic control and to help make sure the rights of demonstrators to assemble peacefully and lawfully were protected. The name and charging information of the man arrested have yet to be released to the public.
At a time when the temperatures of political discourse seem to only rise, skirmishes such as the one reported are disconcertingly common. Despite the unrest, the Salt Lake City Police Department's quick response potentially prevented further escalation. The department has been careful to balance its necessary intervention with the preservation of the demonstrators' constitutional rights.
