Longtime Castro day spa Always Tan Skin & Body (550B Castro Street) has abruptly shuttered after more than 45 years in business in the Castro.
Always Tan customers were notified of the closure via email over the weekend.
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have to announce our closure after 40+ years in the Castro," said Always Tan owner Cecil Russell.
Additionally, Russell stated, "If you feel you are entitled to a refund, please contact your [credit card] company." Always Tan's website and phone number have been disconnected.

Always Tan has been tucked away down a walkway along the 500 block of Castro Street for 47 years. The salon offered full-service massage, tanning beds, and skin and body treatments.
As reported by Hoodline, in 2018, Always Tan was required to obtain a conditional use permit to continue to operate.
SF Planning required the spa to seek a permit after it had operating in the location for nearly four decades, because it had expanded the range of services it provided.

Russell tells Hoodline that Always Tan shuttered because "unforeseen economic conditions made it impossible for the business to move forward."
Russell did not respond to Hoodline's question about the possibility of reopening.
After nearly five decades in the neighborhood, Russell said, "The Castro is a very special and awesome community." "I was blessed to have all the years that I did."
Castro residents have several options for day spas in the neighborhood, including the newly opened Thyme Thai Spa, Ohm Thai Massage, Wela Thai Massage, Castro Star Massage, and M Spa.
