A 44-year-old Marrero woman was killed Friday night when her SUV ran off Louisiana Highway 45, also known as Barataria Boulevard, struck a culvert and a utility pole, and overturned near College Parkway. Joleen Walls was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators say she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
According to Fox 8, Walls was driving a 2006 Toyota 4Runner south on Barataria Boulevard near College Parkway when the SUV traveled off the right side of the roadway into a drainage ditch, an aspect of the crash that remains under investigation. The vehicle then struck a culvert and a utility pole before overturning, and Walls sustained fatal injuries. Louisiana State Police say excessive speed and impaired driving are both suspected contributing factors, though the investigation is still ongoing.
Toxicology samples were collected as part of the crash investigation and will be submitted for analysis, per the LSP spokesman cited in the same report. Those results are not yet available, so the exact chemical or blood-alcohol findings tied to the crash remain an open question.
