A motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash shut down lanes on northbound Interstate 15 in Draper, authorities say. The rider was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive the injuries from the collision, which also involved a black Dodge Journey and a Ford F-350.
According to KUTV, the Dodge Journey had slowed for traffic when the motorcycle traveling behind it skidded, struck the Dodge's left rear, and then hit the rear of the Ford F-350. The occupants of both the Dodge and the F-350 were not transported and did not suffer significant injuries, according to Gephardt Daily. The motorcyclist, meanwhile, was taken to an area hospital, where the rider later died.
As FOX 13 News reported, the crash occurred after 1 p.m. in Draper and triggered multiple lane closures on Interstate 15 before the freeway reopened. The outlet reported the collision was near the northbound 11400 South ramp, though the exact time and precise location have been described differently across reports.
Conflicting Details on Timing and Location
Accounts of exactly when and where the crash happened vary. Gephardt Daily's initial report placed the collision near 11000 South and said it happened at about 1:23 p.m. Saturday, while a separate wire report attributed to einpresswire.com put the crash near 10800 South at approximately 1:21 p.m. on October 3.
The number of lanes affected is similarly disputed. KUTV reported that the crash blocked four right lanes and closed the northbound I-15 entrance ramp north of 11400 South, while Gephardt Daily's initial report said three of six northbound traffic lanes were blocked. FOX 13 News described the closures as multiple and brief, with the freeway reopening after the crash was cleared.
Victim's Identity Not Yet Released
The Utah Highway Patrol had not confirmed additional details about the victim or the cause of the crash as of Saturday, per the same Gephardt Daily account. The motorcyclist's identity had not been released to the public, and investigators have not said what caused the rider to collide with the vehicles ahead.
This is not the first fatal motorcycle crash on I-15 through Draper. In November 2021, the Utah Department of Public Safety identified a motorcyclist killed in a similar collision as 42-year-old Michael Rogers of Lehi, after witnesses said his motorcycle struck the back of a Toyota Prius near 12300 South, closing southbound lanes, according to KUTV. Investigators in that case determined Rogers' injuries were non-survivable, while the Prius occupants were uninjured.
Motorcyclists Face Outsized Risk on Utah Roads
Crashes like Saturday's reflect a broader pattern in state crash data. Motorcycles account for only 3% of registered vehicles in Utah but represented nearly 16% of total traffic fatalities from 2020 to 2024, according to the Utah Highway Safety Office. Speed-related fatalities spiked to a high of 109 in 2020 and have trended downward since, though speed remains the highest risk factor identified by the agency.
Separate Utah Highway Safety Office data shows motorcycle crashes accounted for just 1.3% of people involved in crashes statewide but 15% of deaths, making such crashes roughly ten times more likely to be fatal than other types of collisions. No cause has been determined for Saturday's crash, and the Utah Highway Patrol has not released further details on the investigation.
