A woman riding in a car that was stopped at a traffic signal in Anderson suffered life-threatening injuries early Monday morning after another vehicle slammed into the back of it, according to police. She was first taken to a local hospital before being flown to Indianapolis for further treatment.
The crash happened just before 6 a.m. near the intersection of West 53rd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to wishtv.com. Anderson police said a vehicle was stopped at the signal while traveling south on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when another southbound car struck it from behind. The Anderson Police Department’s preliminary investigation pointed to the rear-end collision as the cause, as WTHR reported.
Injuries Ranged From Critical to Minor
The female passenger in the stopped vehicle bore the brunt of the impact, suffering life-threatening injuries that required air transport to an Indianapolis hospital after she was first evaluated locally. The driver of that same stopped car suffered only minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene, the station’s report notes. The driver of the second vehicle, the one that struck the stopped car from behind, was not hurt at all.
Despite the severity of the crash, the aftermath on scene was described as orderly. Both drivers remained at the location and cooperated fully with responding officers, and per the same account, officers observed no signs of impairment from either driver. The crash remains under investigation, and no additional details about citations or fault have been released.
A Familiar Stretch of Road
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard has seen other serious collisions in recent memory. In a separate incident, Anderson police said a passenger vehicle attempting to turn northbound on the boulevard entered the path of an oncoming motorcycle, according to Fox59. That crash left the motorcycle’s driver in critical condition after being taken to a local hospital and later transported to an Indianapolis hospital, the outlet reported.
No further information has been released about Monday’s crash, including the injured passenger’s condition following her transfer to Indianapolis. Investigators have not indicated whether citations will be issued as the inquiry continues.
