After sitting vacant for over five years, demolition of the former Home Restaurant building at Church & Market finally started yesterday. Here's what it looks like after one day of work.

The much-maligned structure should be fully demolished over the next few days.

The acquisition of the five Ellis Acted buildings, all owned by one pair of landlords, will allow tenants in 19 units to keep their homes.

There are no prices yet, but the 87-unit building will feature one- and two-bedrooms for rent, with 12 percent of them below market rate.

Plans to raze the former Home restaurant and construct a 62-unit apartment building at the corner of Market, 14th and Duboce were unanimously approved by the Planning Commission yesterday.
