Construction on the final phase of the Upper Market Street Safety Project is set to begin Thursday, July 1. The project aims to increase safety and comfort for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike on Upper Market Street between Octavia Boulevard and Castro Street. 

The District 5 supervisor is lobbying the SFMTA to eliminate fare until COVID-19 blows over, “to restore ridership and put money into struggling San Franciscan’s pockets when they need it most.”

Built in 1962, the bridge is set to come down as part of the project to speed up the 38 and 38R-Geary buses.

Starting this week, some streets will be closed to through vehicle traffic in order to prioritize walking and biking as well as to provide more space for social distancing.

In the works for five years, the pilot project aims to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists on Page Street and the surrounding neighborhood.

Despite some initial misgivings, residents and employees have been generally positive about the new street closure.

If the plan is approved, temporary signposts could be put in place as soon as early 2020.

On Tuesday, the agency unanimously approved plans for permanently closing off a short segment of Octavia Boulevard to cars.

Neighbors are invited to give feedback on the proposal at an open house next week.
